
Williams served three terms as a member of the Washington County Board of
Education (from December, 2012 until December, 2024). Elected in 2012, she served
from 2016 until 2024 as the Board’s President. Prior to serving on the Board of
Education, she was employed as an educator with Washington County Public Schools
for 35 years in various positions throughout the county, including as a classroom
teacher, a teacher in the Gifted and Talented program, a Title I Resource Teacher, a
School Achievement Specialist, and the school system’s Title I Coordinator. In her
retirement and before being elected to the school board, Williams did educational
consulting work for the Maryland State Department of Education and Chesapeake
Coalition for Essential Schools.
A native of Washington County, she entered Washington County Public Schools as a
kindergarten student and graduated from North Hagerstown High School. She earned
an associate degree in education from Hagerstown Junior College; a bachelor's degree
in elementary education from Shepherd College; and a master's in reading with
certification as a kindergarten-through-12th grade reading specialist from Hood
College. Her post graduate work in reading and in curriculum and instruction was
through the University of Maryland, College Park, and through a satellite doctoral
program in Hagerstown.
